Eligibility
In most cases, an individual is eligible for child support if he or she is the “custodial” parent of the child and is responsible for his or her daily care. However, child support may still be awarded in joint custody cases when there is a significant discrepancy between the parents’ incomes. Exact conditions for eligibility of child support may vary from state to state.
