People wonder what do I need to think of when I choose a matrimonial lawyer. Well, to begin with you have to look at expertise, how long has the attorney been practicing, are they a member of any professional organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, what kind of experience have they had, how well do they know the judges, how well are they regarded by their peers. That’s one level of questions.

Second level is, perhaps even more important is how comfortable do I feel with this person. Can I talk to this person about things that may be embarrassing to me or things that I’m afraid of? Is there chemistry?

You may also want to ask whether the attorney you’re interviewing has people on his or her staff that are going to be there to help you if the lawyer’s in court, and whether the case is going to be handled by, primarily by the lawyer you’re interviewing or by another lawyer?

You may want to ask are there paralegals who I can work with? There are also questions that you’re going to want to ask about what you’re charged for. Am I charged for photocopying? Am I charged for transportation? Are there minimums that I’m charged? What happens when my retainer is used up? Those are the kinds of questions you want to be thinking about, but ultimately at the end of the day when you leave the attorney’s office you have to say to yourself do I have chemistry with this lawyer?
